Prosecutor in Bhutto assassination case shot dead

The assassination in December 2007 of Pakistan's Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto is still shrouded in mystery.

A United Nations report in 2010 raised the possibility that the Pakistani military could be involved.

On Friday a prosecutor investigating her death was himself shot dead.

Chaudhry Zulfikar was killed as he drove from his home in Islamabad to attend a hearing in the Bhutto case.

Police say 12 bullets were fired by gunmen on a motorcycle who then escaped.

Zulfikar was also investigating the 2008 Mumbai attacks in which 166 people were killed.

His assassination comes days after a Pakistani court put former President Pervez Musharraf on remand for charges of failing to provide adequate security for Bhutto before her assassination.

Speculation has lingered that Bhutto was the victim of a plot by allies of Musharraf who didn't want her to come to power.

High profile members of the Taliban were also under investigation.
