Smiling Sumo Wrestlers Captured on Google Maps

Google Map pictures capture smiling sumo wresters.

Google's mapping products can give you an instantaneous view of almost any place in the world.

As of April 23rd of this year, a sumo hall in Tokyo got a real boost on Google maps, showcasing the happy, round faces of sumo wrestlers in a street view shot.

The pictures allow you to move past their bodies, which stand in front of the hall, and see indoors. The interior of the structure can be explored remotely by online users.

Souvenir stands, the seating areas and best of all, the ring where the matches are held are just a few spots that can be zeroed in on and examined with the click of a mouse. The photos were initially captured on December 25th of 2012 by Google’s street view tricycle.

More than five dozen professional sumo wrestlers came out for the event, hoping to promote the sport across the world with the help of Google.

Historical references suggest sumo wrestling, although perhaps not in its present form, originated over 1500 years ago. As part of the guidelines, they have to wear their traditional dress in public, right down to the feet.
