Homeless stage protest in Athens

STORY: Homeless people from central Athens took to the streets on Friday to call on the government to provide healthcare and improved social services.

The homeless - who marched in silence - carried placards reading "We have no slogans, we have demands" were joined by activists and homeless shelter volunteers.

The symbolic protest was organized by Klimaka, a Greek non-governmental aid agency for the homeless which provides meals, mental and healthcare services and most importantly roof for those in need at its tiny shelter.

Klimaka estimates that homeless in Greece have increased by 25 to 30 percent since 2009. Klimaka had released a study in December 2012 that showed the new homeless have been created from the economic crisis and have a higher social class and education than the traditional homeless person.
