World leaders gather in China to promote Asian development amid concerns over regional stability.

Heads of state including those from Australia, Finland, Myanmar and Japan are in Hainan for the annual BOAO Forum for Asia.

President Xi Jinping opened the meeting promising a peaceful, prosperous China would help its neighbours.

Australian PM Julia Gillard warned that North Korean aggression threatened the security of the entire region.

"All countries in the region share a deep interest in strategic stability but the consequences of conflict are ever more severe for us all. This is nowhere more clear than on the Korean peninsula. There, any aggression is a threat to the interests of every country in the region."

Angry over U.N. sanctions in response to its February nuclear test, North Korea is threatening imminent war with South Korea and the United States.
