Check out UK's abandoned sea forts.
The Maunsell Army Forts could easily be mistaken for a sci-fi movie set. The fortified structures were named after their creator, Guy Maunsell.
Built between 1941 and 1942 in the UK, their purpose was to protect the region from World War II enemy fire.
There were originally 3 forts, each having 7 structures that connected to a central control tower by a walkway.
Six of the towers in each fort were armed and the seventh contained a searchlight
They were considered a huge success by the anti-aircraft command and additional installations were requested. In the end, it was not to be and the existing forts were abandoned in the 1950s.
A tragic accident occurred in 1953 when one of the towers was struck by a ship, resulting in the loss of four civilian lives.
In the 1960s and 1970s they were occupied by various pirate radio stations and used as a broadcasting base.
The structures are now in a state of disrepair, but continue to be a popular tourist attraction.
