Pattycake, New York's famous gorilla has sadly died.

The Bronx Zoo’s cherished gorilla Pattycake has passed away at the age of 40.

She was the first gorilla born in New York City, and among the few to be born and raised by her parents in captivity.

Since her youth, the gorilla had been a favorite among visitors, first at her birthplace, the Central Park Zoo, and then at her adulthood home, the Bronx Zoo.

The two zoos had at one time been in serious competition for the gorilla.

When she was only 6 months old she broke her arm and had to undergo surgery. She was transferred from Central Park to recover away from her parents.

The Bronx Zoo was reluctant to give her back, but it was eventually decided a Central Park home was in her best interest.

She was transferred back to Bronx in 1983 where she gave birth to 10 infants including one pair of twins. They are living in zoos across the US including those in Boston, Buffalo, and Louisville.

Over the years Pattycake captured many headlines and hearts. She was, according to the Wildlife Conservation, a New York institution.
