Christians mark Holy Thursday in Jerusalem
  • 11 years ago
Clergymen and Christian faithful file into the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, here in Jerusalem's Old City.

They're flocking to the ancient church to celebrate mass on Holy Thursday.

According to Christian tradition, Jesus washed the feet of his twelve disciples before the Last Supper, prior to his crucifixion.

Now, the Latin patriarch is washing the feet of twelve of his clergymen.

In attendance at Thursday's mass are many local Palestinian Christians as well as pilgrims from around the world.

The Church of the Holy Sepulchre, believed to have been built on the site of Christ's crucifixion, burial and resurrection, was constructed by the Roman emperor Constantine.

Because of disputes over ownership of the church among different Christian congregations, it is unlocked each morning by a Muslim keyholder.
