A Birmingham airport sign kills a child and injures a family.

Recently, a sign at the Birmingham airport fell on a family, killing a 10-year-old boy. Several other children were taken to the hospital for treatment, while the mother remains in critical condition.

Rescue authorities estimated the sign’s weight between 300 and 400 pounds. The family was reportedly on a layover in Birmingham, waiting to catch a connecting flight. The sign crashed on top of them in the early afternoon hours in the terminal which was just recently renovated.

A group of eyewitness assisted in lifting the sign off of the family members. In lieu of the tragedy, airport crews are double checking all of the other signs to make sure they are secure. Barricades have also been put in place to keep travelers from getting too close.

Earlier this year, 27-year-old Jacob Marx was killed while vacationing in London. He had been walking down a popular street when a large metal sign from a bookmakers store broke free and fell.

It was believed strong winds contributed to the accident.
