Let science show you how to get rid of earthworms.
How do you get that annoying song out of your head?
Researchers have found a way to stop catchy song lyrics from getting stuck in your head.
The phenomenon of unconsciously having a song play over and over again in your head is known as an earworm.
Music psychologists from Western Washington University found that solving an anagram or doing sudoku can be an effective way to stop the earworm song from repeating itself in your head.
But the mental activity can’t be too difficult, or too easy.
Doctor Ira Hyman, who conducted the research said: “Something we can do automatically like driving or walking means…there is plenty of space left for that internal jukebox to start playing. Likewise, if you are trying something too hard, then your brain will not be engaged successfully, so that music can come back.”
The researchers played songs by popular music artists and asked the subjects to complete puzzles like anagrams and sudoku afterwards.
The subjects were surveyed to find out if any of the songs came back as an earworm.
Of all the artists used in the study, Lady Gaga songs were shown to be the most likely to cause an earworm.
