In 2011, the Leveson inquiry was set up to investigate the culture, practices and ethics of the British press. It was prompted after allegations surfaced that journalists from Rupert Murdoch’s Sunday tabloid ‘The News of the World’ were using illegal and criminal methods to obtain information through hacking computers, phones and bribing officials.
