Dead pigs dumped by more than one farm

After one farmer admitted to dumping thousands of dead pigs into the river, Chinese officials now say he may not have been the only source.

State media had said the 6,000 pig carcasses dredged from a river supplying tap water to Shanghai came from Jiaxing City, in the Zhejiang province

But on Friday local Chinese officials said the pigs may not all come from Jiaxing.

The city's deputy mayor said ear tagging on the pigs showed some of the carcasses originated from other areas.

China's state television, CCTV, has put the official number of dead pigs pulled out of the river at 8,000

Authorities found traces of a common pig virus in some of the rotting animal corpses dredged up this week.

Industry insiders say farmers likely dumped them a common habit in an industry which has no system of compensation for losses from disease.
