As Oz The Great And Powerful hits theaters all across the country, Disney is double crossing their fingers for a blockbuster style opening weekend, because there might be a sequel waiting at the end of their yellow brick road. Variety is reporting that the studio actually hired screenwriter, Mitchell Kapner, a few months back to get started on part 2.
Kapner co-wrote the current script for Oz The Great And Powerful, and he wrote the scripts for the Matthew Perry/Bruce Willis comedies The Whole Nine Yards and The Whole Ten Yards. As far as plot details go, we don't have any hints yet. However, we do know that Kapner can use and pull anything he wants from L. Frank Baum's novel, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, because it is public domain. However, he can't use anything that was original to the 1939 film, like Dorothy's ruby slippers...which were actually silver in the book, because that belongs to one of Disney's studio rivals, Warner Bros. So far, critics are saying a lot of great things about the new Oz movie, which stars James Franco, Michelle Williams, and Mila Kunis, and Disney is hoping that the film will bring in around $80 million this weekend in the US alone. And this is just the beginning of a new phase of Disney movie plans which will bring other classic Disney films into fantasy fare including Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty. So, if Variety is calling it a "sequel" does that mean that it's not a "reboot" of the classic Wizard of Oz? And if it isn't a remake, could the sequel continue to follow the adventures of the Wizard, Oscar Diggs....AKA OZ...before Dorothy arrives? Let us know how you feel about this down in the comments section, and tweet us your thoughts over on twitter at ClevverMovies. Thanks so much for watching.
