STORY: The Goodyear tire company's French headquarters was shrouded in a cloud of teargas after three hours of scuffles between riot police and a small group of protesters demonstrating against the planned closure of a factory in the north of the country that could lead to the loss of 4,000 jobs.
A water cannon was briefly used to try and push back the crowd who hurled debris, paint and tear gas pellets that had just been fired at them by police who had set up a barricade to prevent demonstrators reaching the headquarters.
Police at one point charged the protesters, beating some of them with batons and spraying them with teargas. Demonstrators said six people had been injured. Police figures were not immediately available, but eyewitnesses said at least one policeman appeared to have been hurt.
