Uproar in S. Africa after death of man dragged by police

Angry protesters are demanding justice for the death of a taxi driver, who was arrested tuesday in Daveyton, South Africa, dragged behind a police van, and later died in police custody. It happened in front of dozens of witnesses, including Rose Macia, the driver's sister.

(SOUNDBITE) (Shangaan) ROSE MACIA, SISTER OF DEAD MINIBUS DRIVER MIDO MACIA, SAYING:

"I was there. I saw the police beat him up and drag him. They handcuffed him and dragged him all the way up to the police station."

A South African newspaper posted disturbing amateur video of the whole encounter. Police say 27-year-old Mido Macia parked his taxi illegally and resisted arrest.

They cuff him to their van and drive off slowly at first... but soon pick up speed, with no apparent regard for his safety.

"What the police have done is called police brutality!"
