STORY: Jennifer Lawrence won the Oscar for best actress on Sunday (February 24) for her role as a young widow in "Silver Linings Playbook."

Lawrence, who was in a tight race with actress Jessica Chastain for the Academy Award, plays an opinionated young widow in the quirky comedy about a bipolar man and his dysfunctional family.

After hearing her name, Lawrence tripped over her dress on her way up to the stage, but managed to poke fun at herself after receiving her award.

"You guys are just standing up because you feel bad that I fell and that's really embarrassing, but thank you. This is nuts. Thank you to the Academy, and thank you to the women this year. You are so magnificent, and so inspiring, and not just those of you in my category, and it's been so amazing getting to know you, and you've been so nice, and you've made this experience unforgettable," Lawrence said.

It was the first Oscar for the 22-year-old, who was previously nominated for best actress in 2011 for her performance in "Winter's Bone."
