Two minutes to start. 2:00
Then, 45 seconds later, 'Radar Love' begins. 2:45
The whole video lasts 9 minutes, 17 seconds ... Seems like 24 hours
These clips are all from the 1971 movie, Lemans as indicated in the video credits.
I hope you enjoy watching as much as I enjoyed editing it.
I wish to honor all those involved in making the movie, especially Steve McQueen.
A race driver himself, McQueen actually drove the Porsche 917 car during filming, needing no stuntman.
The Porsche 917 is a racecar that gave Porsche its first overall wins at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1970 and 1971. There are 6 variants of the 917. The least-powerful version is the 917K (the most successful, and driven in the Lemans scenes above), which produces around 620 bhp. Powered by the Type 912 flat-12 engine of 4.5, 4.9, or 5 litres, the 917/30 variant was capable of a 0-62 mph (100 km/h) time of 2.3 seconds, 0-124 mph (200 km/h) in 5.3 seconds, and a top speed of over 240 mph (390 km/h).
The spaceframe tubular chassis weighed only 42kg or 93 pounds. The shifter knob was made of balsa wood, just to keep the weight down. Lemans runs 4:00pm - 4:00pm the next day, 24 hours. Lemans 1971 Porsche 917K's did 5,284 km (3,315 mi) at an average speed of 220.2 km/h (137.6 mph) ... [in 24 consecutive hours]
And as for the soundtrack ... I honor Golden Earring ... they generated perhaps THE best driving song ever made, surely responsible for 100,000 speeding tickets since introduced.
