A meteor exploding over a small town in Russia captured everyone's attention. While most stories now are focused on that town's recovering efforts, there's another intriguing related story that was covered by the New York Times.
There were many who saw an opportunity to strike rich in the aftermath of that explosion.
One resident discovered a decent-sized stone under the roof tiles in her shed. She sold it for more than $200, but after the deal went through, a man offered her $1,300.
Alleged police corruption is common in the area and coupled with the fact that trade in meteorite material is mostly illegal, many residents are quiet about what they have found in fear that the stones will be taken by authorities and sold.
