Two persons were shot dead while five others were injured when a group of 10,000 people wanted to storm into a polling centre at Mankachar in western Assam's Dhubri district, bordering Bangladesh. The violence happened at a time when panchayat elections were going on. The BSF, who were on guard, tried to prevent the storming by cane charging. The mob also pelted stones on the BSF, after which the BSF opened fire. The situation remains tense in the area, and police reinforcements are being sent.
