Protests amid uncertainty in Tunisia

5 years ago16 views

For the second day... angry protesters faced off with police in the streets of the tunisian capital.

Holding banners and chanting slogans, they called on the prime minister to resign.

The demonstrations in tunis are the fallout from the assassination wednesday of secular opposition leader, Chokri Belaid-- an open critic of Tunisia's ruling islamist party.

He was a voice for many Tunisians who feared religious radicals were clamping down on freedoms won in the birthplace of the Arab Spring two years ago.

After hundreds of protesters gathered near the interior ministry thursday....

Police began firing teargas to disperse the crowd...

And dozens of anti-riot police rolled in with sirens blaring.

Belaid's funeral could be held Friday, and labor leaders are planning a strike... Raising the possibility of more protests and turmoil.

Meantime... Tunisia's Islamists have rejected a plan by their prime minister to form a temporary coalition government.
