The Fitzroy River in the Queensland city of Rockhampton did not reach an expected peak of 8.7 metres (28.6 feet) on Sunday (February 3) as floodwaters receded, local media said.

The river reached 8.6 metres (28.2 feet) on Saturday (February 2).

Local media has reported that more than 1100 properties have been affected by the floods and that carcases of drowned livestock have been seen floating in the water.

Authorities have warned people not to swim as the water may be contaminated.

Rains following cyclone Oswald dumped more than 200 millimetres (8 inches) of rain across parts of Queensland and northern New South Wales over the past week, swelling rivers and swamping towns.
