Price of Chicken Wings at Record High: Super Bowl
  • 11 years ago
The price of chicken wings is at a record high.

Super Bowl Sunday is the 2nd largest day for food consumption in the U.S. after Thanksgiving Day.

A traditional food of Super Bowl Sunday events includes chicken wings, but due to high demand and a lower production of meat last year, the wholesale price of chicken wings has reached a new record high according to the United States Department of Agriculture.

The price of chicken wings has increased by 14 percent over last year, reaching 2 dollars and eleven cents a pound.

The National Chicken Council estimates that over 1 billion chicken wings will be eaten by Americans on Super Bowl Sunday.

Bill Roenigk, chief economist and market analyst at the Washington, D.C.-based National Chicken Council explained the shortage and subsequent price hike saying:

“Corn makes up more than two-thirds of chicken feed and corn prices hit an all-time high in 2012… less corn equals higher feed costs, which means fewer birds produced.”

The demand and the price for chicken wings always increases during the last quarter of the year and peaks during the Super Bowl,
but this time it is predicted that demand will maintain even after the big game.

What do you think? How will the chicken wing shortage affect you?
