Beaches have served as inspiration for many talented artists.
One such artist recently installed a masterpiece on location, in the beach sands.
Swedish artist, Gunilla Klingberg, created intricate patterns in the sand using the treads from truck tires, mounted on a rolling cylinder, and attached to a tractor. Dubbed ‘A Sign in Space’, the work was installed on Laga beach, for the 2012 Sense & Sustainability biennial in Spain. A machine operator would roll the cylinder over the sands creating a sprawling, detailed landscape.
Depicting symmetrical stars, geometrical shapes are mixed into to art, effortless blending into the shore.
Klingberg describes the process stating “A graphic star-pattern composed of truck tires is printed as a relief on the sand at Laga beach during low tide. At high tide the pattern will slowly vanish as the tide rises. The cylinder is connected to the beach cleaner tractor which drives from side to side of the beach in the morning, creating the pattern covering the whole beach area.”
