Guillermo del Toro, aka the reigning godfather of motion-picture horror, is back once again with his new horror flick, Mama. The supernatural thriller tells the story of two young girls who go missing the same day their mother was murdered. For five long years, their Uncle Lucas, played by Game of Thrones' Nikolaj Coster-Waldau and his girlfriend, Annabel played by recent Golden Globe winner Jessica Chastain, go on a desperate search for them. In a twisted fairytale type rescue, the young sisters are found alive in an isolated cabin in the middle of nowhere. In true horror fashion, the couple quickly realize there may have been another power, which kept the girls alive all those years. This spooky sequence appears to have brought in slightly above average reviews from critics with the Wall Street Journal declaring, ""Mama" announces the arrival of a director who works unusually well with actors...the two children are truly scary...and he creates highly charged environments, effective sound designs and powerful fantasy sequences." First-time director, Andrés Muschietti definitely appears to have made a solid first impression, but despite all the positivity, the film left Rolling Stone Magazine unimpressed, saying, "You know something is up when what looks like a cheapie fright flick is produced by Gee-air-mo Del Toro and boasts an Oscar-nominated actress in Jessica Chastain. Mama doesn't live up to their potential, but the film knows how to creep you out." Be warned, Mama may leave some of you wanting more due to its lack of guts and gore, but the New York Time's praises the movie saying, "This ghost story offers a strong sense of time and place, along with the kinds of details that don't usually figure into horror flicks." Although critics appear to be in the middle about the supernatural thriller, the flick is sure to leave audiences on the edge of their seats. If you're in the mood for a scare, this emotional horror film may be just what you're looking for. After all, nothing is scarier than creepy little kids, right?
