Town Declares Emergency After Attacks By Wolves

A town declares an emergency following attacks by wolves.

Wolf populations in a rural part of northeastern Russia’s Sakha Republic are dangerously high.

Wolves have been raiding pastures in central Sakha, and migrating from their usual habitats in the forests and mountains of the region.

Experts say this is due to a decline in the population of the wolves natural prey - the mountain hare, which has resulted in more wolf attacks on livestock like reindeer and horses.

But wolf pack numbers should start to go down now that Sakha’s regional chief Yegor Borisov has declared a state of emergency, and cash rewards have been offered up to the hunters who bag the most wolf pelts.

Sakha is reportedly the coldest place on earth that is populated by humans.

In the remote and sparsely developed area, the reward money for killing the most wolves, which amounts to over 3 thousand dollars, would be quite useful to the winner.

Borisov released a statement saying: "The population is worried as never before by mass deaths of domestic animals due to wolves."

The number of wolves now stands at an estimated 35 hundred, and they aim to bring that number down to just 500.

Borisov has declared that the wolf-hunting would be open throughout the year.
