Ben Affleck wins big at the Critic's Choice Awards and laughs off his Oscar snub. When the Academy announced its nominees for the 85th annual Oscars earlier this week, one name surprisingly not included in the best director category?? Ben Affleck! The news stunned moviegoers and critics alike, who thought Affleck was a "best director" shoo-in for his suspenseful historical drama Argo. But Ben Affleck's work behind the camera didn't go unnoticed by the Broadcast Film Critics Association last night. Just hours after his academy snub made headlines, Affleck walked on stage to accept the award for best directing in front of a standing ovation at the Critics Choice Movie Awards. A shocked Affleck flaunted a healthy perspective on the "snub" subject and jokingly thanked the academy for the award, adding quote "I'm kidding, this is the one that counts." Argo was the big winner of the evening, also taking home the prize for best picture. Affleck beat out five other critically acclaimed filmmakers for his best directing award, including Kathryn Bigelow who's directing work on "Zero Dark Thirty" was also overlooked by the academy. Other big winners at the Critic's Choice Awards included Daniel Day Lewis for his performance in Lincoln, Jessica Chastain for her Zero Dark Thirty character, and Jennifer Lawrence won two trophy's for best actress in a comedy and best actress in an action movie. Despite Affleck's Oscar's slight, Argo will still have a major presence at this year's academy awards with it's seven nominations, including one for best picture. Catch the 85th Annual academy awards hosted by Seth McFarlane on Sunday February 24th. So what do you guys make of Affleck's Oscar snub? Was the Academy justified or entirely off base to leave him out of the nominees for best director? Sound off in the comments below and don't forget to subscribe.
