We're one step closer to Hollywood's biggest night as the 85th annual Academy Awards nominations were announced this morning in Beverly Hills. Seth McFarlane and Emma Stone had an early morning, as they announced the nominees for this year's Academy Awards. Steven Spielberg certainly has some celebrating to do, as Lincoln leads with 12 nominations followed by Life of Pi with 11. Fan favorite movies like The Hobbit earned 3 noms, The Avengers got 1, and The Dark Knight was not recognized in any of the categories. The latest James Bond installment, Skyfall, received 4 nominations but was not recognized for Best Picture despite the fact that there was one remaining spot available. 9 films were recognized in the Best Picture category, including Amour, Argo, Beasts of the Southern Wild, Django Unchained, Les Miserables, Life of Pi, Lincoln, Silver Linings Playbook, and Zero Dark Thirty. There were noticeable snubs in the Best Director category, with omissions like Kathryn Bigelow, Ben Affleck, and Tom Hooper although their films were all nominated for Best Picture. Instead, noms went to Michael Haneke for Amour, Benh Zeitlin for Beasts of the Southern Wild, Ang Lee for Life of Pi, Steven Spielberg for Lincoln, and David O Russell for Silver Linings Playbook. The Best Actor category was stacked with heavy hitters and previous winners, two time winners Daniel Day Lewis and Denzel Washington were both nominated for their roles in Lincoln and Flight. Previous nominee Joaquin Phoenix was recognized for his performance in The Master. First time nominees Hugh Jackman and Bradley Cooper both claimed a nom for Les Mis and Silver Linings Playbook. Ben Affleck was also arguably snubbed in this category as he was not nominated for his role in Argo. Best Actress nominations went to a very wide range of actresses, Jessica Chastain, Jennifer Lawrence, Emmanuelle Riva, Quvenzhané Wallis, and Naomi Watts. Emmanualle Riva being the oldest nominee to ever receive a nomination at age 85, and Quvenzhané Wallis being the youngest at age 9. The supporting actor and actress categories shaped up to be a who's-who of Hollywood. The Best Supporting Actor category gave noms to strong contenders Alan Arkin, Robert De Niro, Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Tommy Lee Jones, and Christoph Waltz. While Best Supporting Actress noms went to Amy Adams, Sally Field, Anne Hathaway, Helen Hunt, and Jacki Weaver. Best Adapted Screenplay nominations went to Argo, Beasts Of The Southern Wild, Life Of Pi, Lincoln, and Silver Linings Playbook, while Best Original screenplay noms went to Amour, Django Unchained, Flight, Moonrise Kingdom, and Zero Dark Thirty. And finally, Best Animated Movie nominations were given to Brave, Frankenweenie, ParaNorman, The Pirates! Band of Misfits and Wreck-It Ralph. So what do you think of his year's Oscar contenders?
