Marlon Wayans returns to his horror movie spoof roots, but is A Haunted House the next Scary Movie or just scarily bad? A Haunted House opens in theaters January 11th, and is directed by feature film newcomer, Michael Tiddes. The movie spoofs paranormal horror films like Paranormal Activity, and The Devil Inside as it follows a young couple, Malcolm and Kisha played by Marlon Wayans and Essence Atkins, as they move in together, taking the next step in their relationship. Soon after the big move, Malcolm and Kisha notice some unusual activity. But it turns out it's not coming from the house, it's coming from the demon-possessed Kisha. The rest of the movie documents the hilarious supporting cast, including comedians David Koechner, Nick Swardson, and Cedric the Entertainer, as they all try to exorcise the demon and save Malcolm's girlfriend, as well as their relationship. As we learned from interviews with the cast, a lot of what you'll see in this movie is improvised. Although this results in hilarious moments, the pacing and story-telling aspects of the film leave something to be desired. The talented cast of actors definitely bring energy and their individual styles of comedy to the film, but similar to the Wayans-clan directed and written Scary Movie franchise, if you're looking for a mature movie, this isn't it. So if you want to watch a movie that pokes fun at what many consider to be a played-out genre, or even if you're a fan of the Paranormal Activity franchise who can appreciate a pop culture spoof, you'll probably enjoy this movie. But if you've got kids on your watch, I'd skip this R-rated comedy. The nudity and racy jokes are more appropriate for an older audience.
