As we anxiously await the nominees for this year's Academy Awards, our friends across the pond have announced the results of this year's BAFTA Award nominations. This year's nominees for the British Academy of Film and Television Arts Awards aren't too surprising, with the list of films being recognized looking very much like those of other award shows. Steven Spielberg's Lincoln leads the pack with 10 nominations including Best Film, Leading Actor for Daniel Day-Lewis, Supporting Actor for Tommy Lee Jones and Supporting Actress for Sally Field. One interesting omission is Steven Spielberg for Best Director. In his place are Michael Haneke for Amour, Ben Affleck for Argo, Quentin Tarantino for Django Unchained, Ang Lee for Life of Pi and Kathryn Bigelow for Zero Dark Thirty. Another omission in the director category is Brit Tom Hooper who helmed Les Miserables and was nominated in 2010 for The King's Speech. Les Miserables did get a Best Picture nod along with Argo, Life of Pi, Lincoln and Zero Dark Thirty. Nothing is more British than 007 himself James Bond and though his latest Skyfall, which has made over a billion at the box office and is the highest-grossing film in UK history, didn't earn a Best Film nomination, it did manage to receive 8 nominations including Outstanding British Film, Supporting Actor for Javier Bardem and Supporting Actress for Judi Dench. Other nominees for Outstanding British Film include Anna Karenina, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, Les Miserables and Seven Psychopaths. Animated film nominees include Brave, Frankenweenie and Paranorman. The Hobbit earned three nominations for Visual Effects, Sound and Make-up & Hair while The Dark Knight Rises and The Avengers each earned one nomination, also in the Visual Effects category. Other Visual Effects nominees are Life of Pi and Prometheus. The awards will be handed out on Sunday, February 10th. So are you surprised by any of the nominees and which films are you rooting for?
