An English stroke sufferer wakes up speaking fluent Welsh.
The aftermath of a stroke can be terrifying. But, one elderly man was left with a bizarre ability after a stroke.
The 81-year-old Englishman, named Mr. Morgan woke up speaking Welsh rather than his native language. The most baffling part is that Morgan only spent a few months in Wales during the Second World War.
He is now learning English all over again. The language switch was caused by a brain disorder known as aphasia, where stroke sufferers can lose language skills but acquire other abilities they never knew they had.
Morgan’s grandmother spoke Welsh and so does his wife. He stated “I was born in 1931 and when the war came I was sent down to Wales as an evacuee. It gave my wife the shock of her life when I started speaking Welsh.”
Back in 2010, a hospital stay resulted in a language switch for a 13-year-old Croatian girl. The teenager woke from a 24 hour coma fluently speaking German.
She had only just begun studying the language in school. The girl could still understand Croatian, but was only able to respond in German.
