House Speaker John Boehner has abandoned fall-back legislation aimed at avoiding the "fiscal cliff" of tax rises and spending cuts due to a lack of support from his party.
"Plan B", as its called, would limit income tax increases to the wealthiest Americans.
The measure had been blasted by the Democrats as a diversion that would never have passed in the Senate, where they hold a majority.
Now the Republican-led House has gone into recess, but may return as soon as December 27th with a new plan.
