Iraq president's health 'improving' after stroke

Iraq's president is on the mend, according to doctors treating him at a Baghdad hospital.
Jalal Talabani was in intensive care under a team of international specialists after he had a stroke on Monday.
(SOUNDBITE) (Arabic) DOCTOR MOUSSA BADR, DIRECTOR OF BAGHDAD MEDICAL CITY, SAYING:
"The medical team which has been formed in the hospital of Medical City and is supervised by the Minister of Health is continuing to check the health condition of His Excellency. The crew carried out a number of laboratory tests and X-rays. The tests proved that the condition of His Excellency is stable and improving."
The 79-year-old Kurdish statesman former guerilla spent years fighting for Kurdish rights.
Talibani survived wars, exile and infighting in northern Iraq to become the country's first Kurdish president.
He has since been pivotal in navigating the political turmoil that often erupts in Iraq's fragile power-sharing government, split among Shi'ites, Sunnis and ethnic Kurds.
