China working on research to grow vegetables on Mars.
With Mars rover curiosity's success, MARS seems to be the hot new destination for space exploration.
China’s space program wants to grow vegetables on the moon and Mars.
Future astronauts might have access to fresh vegetables thanks to a successful experiment done by researchers from the Chinese Astronaut Research and Training Centre in Beijing.
Four different varieties of vegetables were harvested from a cabin that houses an ecological life support system that also produces oxygen.
Using plants and algae, the system is designed to sustain astronauts that are living on the moon or Mars in the future.
Other countries have successfully tested similar systems, but this is the first time China has had testing done for extra terrestrial gardening.
NASA is not allowed to work together with the Chinese space program on their technology.
Astronomer Jonathan McDowell told National Public Radio that “This blanket ban sort of goes against the scientists' natural tendency to want to talk to each other in this very international and globalized world.”
Meanwhile, another bold proposed Mars venture comes from the visionary entrepreneur, Elon Musk who wants to send 80,000 people per year to the red planet and set a permanent base there.
