The majority of Americans would like to see Hillary Clinton in the White House in 2016 -- that's according to a new national poll.

The figures are fuelling speculation that the US Secretary of State will run for president to succeed Barack Obama.

The poll by ABC News and the Washington Post found fifty seven percent of all Americans would back a Clinton presidential bid.

Thirty seven per cent said they wouldn't.

Clinton is particularly popular among women, with sixty six per cent saying yes to her candidacy.

She even won support from 23 per cent of Republicans.

It's early days, and the US Secretary of State's bid for the White House remains very much hypothetical.

At 65 years old, she's due to retire before the end of Obama's second term.

She rounds off her diplomatic career more popular than ever.

The same poll showed 68 per cent of Americans approve of her work as the US's top diplomat.
