Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has returned home triumphantly after winning upgraded status at the United Nations.
He congratulated his people for this "historical" event, saying that the Palestinians now have a state.
But Israel's cabinet unanimously rejected the UN vote upgrading the Palestinians' status to that of a "non-member state".
The Jewish state also approved settlement plans in its occupied territory in the West Bank.
The UN chief Ban Ki-moon warns that if Israel goes ahead with the plan, it would jeopardize any prospects for peace with the Palestinians.
