A red alert has been declared in Pakistan as floodwaters sweep from the north of the country into the south. Mass evacuations of villages on the banks of rising rivers have begun. Officials say 12 million people have been affected by the worst monsoon rains in decades, with about 1600 dead. Rescuers are still trying to reach densely populated regions left without food or drinking water. Forecasters predict more heavy rains.
