Thanksgiving came early as stars Neil Patrick Harris and Blair Underwood joined 95-year-old actor Kirk Douglas at the Los Angeles Mission on Wednesday (November 21) to help serve up a traditional holiday meal to the homeless living in L.A.'s "Skid Row.''

The Hollywood stars were among the many volunteers who took part in the annual event that feeds thousands of men, women and children a Thanksgiving meal of turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, and pumpkin pie.

Neil Patrick Harris added that the event is a real opportunity to give something back.

SOUNDBITE Neil Patrick Harris saying (English):

"I am very thankful to be in the position that I am in to be able to help all these people. To be able to help the people that work in the mission, that work tirelessly. So, to be able to get this acknowledgment and recognition for them, it is important."

Legendary actor Kirk Douglas and his wife Anne, who've long been associated with the event and the Los Angeles Mission, were there again to lend their support.

Preparations for the Thanksgiving dinner is several weeks in the making to ensure that 3,000 pounds of turkey, 80 gallons of gravy, 700 pounds of corn and nearly 400 pumpkin pies are ready to serve on time.

The Los Angeles Mission prepares roughly 4,000 meals for its Thanksgiving feast, and over 600,000 meals annually.
