Celebrations in Chicago as Obama seals victory.
When the news broke on Tuesday that President Barack Obama had won re-election, more than 10,000 supporters in Chicago began to celebrate.
Although they had expected the result, many were surprised by the speed of the poll decision.
After the election party, one Obama supporter said her hours of hard work going door to door were all worth it.
[Vivian Ezegi, Obama Supporter]:
"It was wonderful. It was absolutely wonderful. I mean, it was a really really hard fight but at the end we came out winning. We came out the victors."
Carry Grazen said when the election was announced in favor of Obama she breathed a sigh of relief.
[Carry Grazen, Obama Supporter]:
"Everything, it was absolutely everything. It was either we weren't going to have health care and not care about women. They wanted small government but then they wanted government that interfered with your personal life which was crazy."
One young Obama supporter says the election party is a night he will never forget.
[Peter Resendez, Obama Supporter]:
"When he came out was nice but when he came back on stage and it was everybody. The vice president, members of his cabinet and such. And then he had a moment when everybody was off the stage and he came back out and I saw tears in his eyes and it gave me goose bumps and it made feel proud and connected."
President Obama has overcome deep doubts among voters about his handling of the U.S. economy, to score a clear victory over Republican challenger Mitt Romney.
But the government in Washington remains divided, as although Democrats control the Senate, the Republicans maintain the House of Representatives.
