General Valery Gerasimov has been named the new head of Russia's armed forces, as President Vladimir Putin continues his shake-up of the military hierarchy.

Gerasimov was put forward by new defence minister Sergey Shoigu, who presented Gerasimov to Putin before the official appointment was made.
