The Mercury Album of the Year nominees for 2012 covered a diverse range of styles and genres, highlighting what has been an exciting period for UK music. Out of 12 quality nominees only one could win the ultimate prize and this year it was quartet Alt-J.

Alt-J have been around since 2007 but debut album 'An Awesome Wave' only came out in May in Europe and in September in the US.
