Military field tests for a truck mounted laser weapon developed by Boeing will occur in the coming year. The laser system for taking down enemy missiles and other unmanned projectiles is called HEL MD, which stands for High Energy Laser Mobile Demonstrator.

Mike Rinn, Boeing Directed Energy Systems vice president and program director is quoted in a press release as saying: “The Boeing HEL MD program is applying the best of solid-state laser technology to ensure the Army has speed-of-light capability to defend against rockets, artillery, mortars, and unmanned aerial threats -- both today and into the future.”

The military has been trying to develop laser weapon technology for many years. They faced problems with energy efficiency and cooling as well as fitting the technology into a usable size.

The lasers developed by Boeing run on electricity, so the ammo would be unlimited as long as the generators have working power capabilities. The laser apparatus is mounted to an eight wheel 500-horsepower military Heavy Expanded Mobility Tactical Truck.
