Ahmadinejad's Cameraman Seeks Asylum in the US - as part of the news series by GeoBeats.
One of the cameramen that came to New York with the Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad for the United Nations General Assembly stayed in the US and has applied for political asylum. His family, fearing retribution, has also fled Iran. The cameraman would not say where they have fled to, in an effort to protect his family’s safety. His lawyer said " The regime wanted him to do things that he didn’t want to do,” and that "while he was here... his position on certain things became known to the Iranian government." He is permitted to stay in the US since his lawyer has filed an application for political asylum. His whereabouts are currently unknown.
Ahmadinejad spoke to the UN delegation on the Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur. This was his eighth appearance before the UN General Assembly and also his last. Many delegates, including the US representative, left the room as the Iranian President took the stage.
Do you think the United States should grant the cameraman political asylum? Why or why not?
