Fish Species Has Hooked Penis Resembling Weapon - as part of the news series by GeoBeats.
Male and female members of the freshwater fish, dubbed the llanos mosquitofish have very unusual characteristics. The males reportedly have four hooks or claw-like features on their genitalia, bearing resemblance to an ancient weapon. The lady fish have a bright anal spot.
Apparently the female fish developed a blocking mechanism to prevent unwanted male fish from penetration, so the males evolved in response. A biologist explains the counter effect - “Having four hooks on the gonopodium may provide a means of overcoming female resistance”. Biologists believe the colorful anal spot on the females serves as an indicator to help males find their way and correctly identify the same species.
Ealrier this summer, another fish garnered quite a bit of attention due to its odd penis characteristics. The Phallostethus cuulong, otherwise known as the ‘penis head fish’ was discovered in Vietnam. The genitalia consisted of a pointed hook and rod. Researchers concluded that the weapon-like apparatus was used to strongly hold the female in place during mating.
