At least eight civilians were killed in co-ordinated bomb attacks targeting police checkpoints just north of the capital Baghdad on Sunday, police and hospital sources said.

They said that 22 people were also wounded when three parked car bombs went off simultaneously in Taji, 20 km (12 miles) north of Baghdad.

The blast was the most deadly among a string of a string of car bomb blasts targeting mainly police checkpoints killed at least 17 people across Iraq on Sunday.
