Oregon Brewery Makes Beard Beer - as part of the news series by GeoBeats.
There are literally thousands of beers to choose from.
One brewery in Oregon has gone for a creative and fun approach to offer customers a truly unique beer guzzling experience. The Rogue Ales Brewery in Newport has created a new ale, developed from their award-winning brewmaster, John Maier’s beard yeast.
To put it simply, they will be offering a beard beer using yeast from Maier's 34 year old beard.
The company was having some trouble harvesting new yeast. So, as a joke another employee swabbed and snipped Maier’s beard and sure enough, yeast was found. (The beer is now fermenting at the brewery. Maier states “I don't know why, yeast is everywhere. Rogue Ales President adds, “You're really not drinking the beard you're drinking a great beer that happens to have a yeast in it that comes from a beard”.
Several years ago, a Japanese brewery offered another bizarre beer. Milk manufactures were tossing out an abundance of surplus milk, so the brewery decided to add beer yeast. The concoction worked and a new drink was born dubbed “bilk”.
Would you be up for drinking beer made using yeast from a beard?
