The residents of this small town in northern Ecuador have lived here peacefully for more than half a century. Surrounded by rain forest, they are largely cut off from the comforts and challenges of modern society.
The people live in harmony with nature, and do everything by hand. The land gives them everything they need to live healthy lives. In the 1990's, large reserves of copper were discovered under their land. The prospect of gigantic profits prompted two international corporations to draw up excavation plans. It soon became clear that the residents and their settlement would have to be swept away to make room for the mine. The residents had to make a decision. Some sold their land rights, while others protested against the predatory disregard of the radical relocation strategy. The need to make a decision for or against the mining company, and for or against their own biosphere, divided the community and even families.
