Syria has signed an agreement to allow Arab League observers into the country to monitor how the regime is dealing with the unrest. The League had threatened to ask the UN Security Council to take action, unless Damascus gave the green light. Beirut-based political analyst Kamel Wazne believes the opposition's call for foreign intervention is not about protecting civilians, but pursuing its own gains.
