Tuesday, January 24th, 2012 (Burleigh Heads, Gold Coast, AUS): Wild weather and flooding may be thrashing South-East Queensland, but it hasn't dampened the spirits of surfers competing at the Billabong World Junior Championships at Burleigh Heads on Australia's Gold Coast.

Following three days of sunny, clean conditions, storms have moved in and the surf has jumped-up for the third and final event on the ASP World Junior Tour, and a host of visiting internationals have progressed with heat wins to advance to Round 3.

South Africans David Van Zyl (Durban, ZAF) and Dylan Lightfoot (Jeffreys Bay, ZAF) put on a commanding display in the stormy conditions, defeating Japan's Kaishu Tanaka (JAP) and Hawaiian Kalani David (Haw) respectively.

Lightfoot's two-wave combined heat-score was the second highest of the morning and the win over the Hawaiian, David, sets him up for a Round 3 clash against Brazilian Filipe Toledo (BRA).

No such luck for fellow South African, Michael February (ZAF), however, with the natural-footer losing out to a lucky last-minute ride by Japanese rider, Arashi Kato (JAP).

Three American surfers also advanced into Round 3 with Chase Wilson (Newport Beach, Ca, USA) defeating Keala Naihe (Haw), Andrew Doheny (New Smyrna, Fl, USA) defeating Dylan Kowalski (Wrightsville Beach, NC, USA) and the morning's highest scorer, Evan Thompson (New Smyrna Beach, FL, USA) eliminating Pierre-Valentin Laborde (FRA) with a total 16.00pts to the Frenchman's 4.77pts.

The wild weather is forecast to continue, but organisers will push through, happily making the most of the consistent swell.

Remaining Men's Round 3 heats and Women's Round 3 are on standby for tomorrow, with organisers making an official call on proceedings at 07:30am local time.
