Cat Running for Mayor of Halifax - as part of the news series by GeoBeats.
Cats are amazing animals. Not only do they have nine lives, they can also apparently ruffle some political feathers.
One three-year-old kitty in Halifax, dubbed Tuxedo Stan has gained attention during the political race for mayor in Halifax. The cat’s owners initiated the Tuxedo Party, with Stan as the leader to bring awareness and prompt action against the abundance of feral cats in Halifax.
Although the law claims that a cat cannot run for mayor, Stan’s Facebook page states “The Tuxedo Party is a political movement aimed to improve the welfare of felines in Halifax Regional Municipality because neglect isn't working".
The Party has received quite a positive buzz in the area. One candidate tweeted “I’m just glad I’m not running against Tuxedo Stan. He is everywhere these days.”
Stan isn’t the only political feline. The town of Talkeetna in Alaska has had a special mayor for 15 years. As KTUU notes – ‘several of the town residents didn't like the candidates who were running for mayor, so as a joke, they encouraged enough people to elect Stubbs the cat as a write-in candidate, and he actually won.'
