On Tuesday, the spokesperson for China’s Ministry of Health, Deng Haihua, officially announced that the plague has returned to China. One man has been left dead in southwestern Sichuan province, but authorities are making every effort to control the spread.

Deng’s speech came a week after the actual death, and several days after the initial report that the cause of death was the bubonic plague.

An NTD reporter called the press office in the Sichuan Provincial Health Department that made the initial announcement for detailed information, but got refused.

"We don't accept phone call interview or consultation. If you are from a company, please fax us with your company's official seal. And then we will deal with it, OK?"

On September 2, several villagers in Ganzi Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture ate a dead marmot they found. Two days later, one of the herdsmen became sick, showing symptoms including diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and fever. He died on September 7.
Deng is saying that no one who had contact with the man has developed symptoms, but they have been placed under quarantine.

The plague killed one person last year and two in 2010 in China.
