China Calls Japan's Diaoyu Island Purchase "Illegal"
The Chinese regime has called Japan's move to purchase a group of disputed islands "illegal and invalid."

Japan's Chief Cabinet Secretary Osamu Fujimura announced the purchase on Monday, one day after the leaders of the two countries met at the APEC Summit in Russia.

During that brief exchange, Chinese leader Hu Jintao had warned Japan to realized, quote, "the severity of the situation and not make a wrong decision", state-run CCTV reported.

The Diaoyu Islands, called Senkaku in Japan, is a group of small islands in the East China Seas. It's been the subject of sovereignty disputes between Japan, China and Taiwan.

Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesman Hong Lei told reporters on Monday that Chinese authorities oppose Japan's purchase of the islands.

"We are closely following the developments of the issue and will take necessary measures to protect the country's territorial sovereignty."

The Chinese regime had endorsed recent anti-Japanese protests in the country, after Japan briefly detained Chinese nationals who had landed on the Diaoyu islands.

Professor Xia Ming from the City University of New York believes Chinese authorities are fanning nationalism at the risk of an all-out conflict with Japan.

"It does not seem likely that the Communist government can get the Diaoyu Islands, so this struggle means little to the Chinese public. If China is using the issue to fan up nationalism, then the scary thing is that, once that sentiment boils over, the Chinese government will find it very difficult to come to any compromise on the issue."

Japan has not disclosed how much it will pay for the islands. Last week Japanese media reported the government was set to pay around 26 million US dollars to purchase the islands from current owners.
